October/November

Hello family.  Some events from October/November
1.  Mom and Dad went to A concert, the Australian Pink Floyd at Usana Amph theatre.  From right to left Amber's Mom, Ambers Uncle Dave, Amber's Aunt Angela, me, Amber.  Lots of good music, lots of relaxing, and lots of electronic cigarettes and other drugs.

#2-Watching Emery play soccer and hanging out with Uncle Dennis
#3-We got to go watch Ricky's baptism!  It was beautiful and a nice spirit was there.  Ben said the words perfectly and Baptized his little brother.  This is me playing on Aunt Becky's tramp after the baptism.  Thanks for the invite and the good food Aunt Becky!
#4-Here I am with one of my favorites, cousin June.  Mom and Dad invited Uncle Greg and Aunt Bonnie over for Brats and s'mores.  June got a little camper chair just like me!  We enjoyed fun conversation, especially Uncle Gregg telling some funny dating stories about Aunt Bonnie.  I have a crazy Aunt Bonnie and I hope June gets some of her spunk and zeal for life so we can have some good times together as we grow up!
#5-Dad's been watching baseball.  He's so excited the Cubs made the playoffs and enjoyed watching them beat the Pirates and the Cardinals.  He took me along to RC Willey to watch the games.  I loved running around the store and all the space to rome.  Dad got to be known on a first name basis by the people there.  He was in heaven watching baseball in a nice recliner on TV's anywhere from 55" to 90".  Unfortunately they got swept by the Mets 4-0.  I didn't get to know Baba, but his baseball spirit lives on!  (I'm a pretty good player already)
#6-Cousin Emery stayed at our house one night.  She helped give me a bath.  I am especially enjoying bath time lately.
#7-I learned how to walk!  I'm becoming quite independent and don't need Dad and Mom as much as they think I do.  I love toys I can push and walk around everywhere
#8-Dad had a cousin Spencer pass away and we went to his funeral on a Wednesday.  Aunt Mindy came from Germany and Uncle Phil came from Colorado.  It was a beautiful funeral.  We enjoyed family time Tuesday night and Wednesday.  Here I am with cousins Emery and Rachel
#9 and 10-For Halloween my family was the wizard of oz!  Mom made Dad's costume and got hers and mine for great deals on Amazon.  I love to roar like a lion, but I didn't enjoy actually being a Lion that much.  It was hot inside that costume!  But I got to go trick or treating to some of Mom and Dad's friends house that night too.  I like Halloween!

#11-Mom and Dad went to visit Logan one weekend to celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary.  Because Dad's life was busy in May they finally got around to it in October.  Mom planned it and surprised Dad with tickets to Utah State/Boise State football game.  Utah State crushed them!  They also did typical Logan stuff.  They ate Aggie Ice cream, ate at the Bluebird restaurant, ate at Firehouse Pizzeria, rode their bikes everywhere (this picture is on bikes) and remembered good times from their first year of marriage and their time dating.  I'm a future Aggie!  (At least that's what they keep telling me.)

#12-Grandma Eileen came to visit from West Virginia.  It's the second time I've met her.  She spoiled me lots.  We went to the aquarium, ate out a lot, went to the curiosity museum and other fun stuff.

#13-I love my cousin Jensen and Buddy.  It was so fun to see him and I can't wait for Thanksgiving to see him again!

I love you all!

Loving Fall

Hello Family!  It's Fast Sunday!!! Hope to hear from some of you today.  Like maybe Travis???  Or Becky??? Or Dennis??? One can dream, right?

Mom and Reed, I hope you know I read and enjoyed your last posts, sorry I didn't comment.  Sometimes I check from my phone and it's not so easy to comment, and then I never bother to go back on the laptop and make a comment.

Anyway, we are doing well.  I do post every now and then on www.benandmarindashaha.blogspot.com.  I have quite a few pictures up there including of our recent trip to Salzburg and some of the Nazi sites we visited if you want to keep up with us.  If you can't access it for some reason, please let me know!

So, life is pretty good for us right now.  I absolutely LOVE fall here in Germany and am sad to think it is our last one.  Really, it's such a beautiful season here. Our base is surrounded by vineyards and this is the season for grape picking and harvesting and the vines are so full and beautiful right now.  Ben had Friday off of work and we spent Fri and Sat in the Black Forest (two hour drive) and want to go back next weekend!  Today is the last day of Octoberfest here in Stuttgart.  Whereas Munich definitely has the biggest fest, Stuttgart's isn't far behind.  It's like a carnival on steroids.  This year I caved and bought the girls dirndls and James lederhosen and we took them to the fest to do the rides.  I think the fest is just ok, but there are people here on base that go all the time and buy tickets for the beer tents and just get stone drunk and love everything about fest.  So, sometimes I kind of feel like we're the oddballs.  I wish I could teleport all of you guys here.  I do miss you all so much and it's hard to hear about you guys playing football in between conference sessions and all of that.  I'm dreading Thanksgiving.  Hardest holiday by far to be away from home.

Ben has a cataract on his eye and has to get surgery again.  Does that just not sound so OLD???  It's depressing getting old. But of course he still acts and looks youthful… plays ball with James, wrestles with James, runs around the house with the girls on his back.  He is going to Israel this week, AGAIN… I have to say I'm pretty proud of him in his job.  He has been around for the longest in his office, and is now considered the go-to guy when it comes to all things Israel.  He has become quite the expert and when I go to the work functions I can tell his colleagues really admire him and his work.  So, now a new FAO is moving here whose area is the Middle East and is basically bumping Ben from his job.  Ben is a bit sad to leave the guys he loves to work with and all the excitement and chaos that comes from being on the Israel desk, but he is now going to start working at the Poland desk, which obviously makes sense.  His biggest disappointment in life right now is that AFN (Armed Forces Network) stopped working and he can't get baseball or football at the moment.

Emily loves school and all the extra activities she's involved in… she and Caroline have joined the girl scouts!  There are some hardcore troop leaders who live here on base and they do a great job of organizing the meetings and activities and the girls love it, so why not?  My only beef is what is the deal with all of the patches you have to get and the vest?!  I'm not joking, I spent close to $90 for their vests and badges.  Is it not a bit of a racket??  But I digress.  Em is doing swimming, which is fun because it's at the German pool with a German instructor and German swim mates.  I get a little irritated with some of the German moms because they are just so German about stuff!  I got lectured the other day because I wasn't wearing shower slippers in the shower room when I was helping Em after the lesson.  So, the next week I brought a pair of flip-flops to change into while I helped her shower.  And then a lady got after James for not wearing shower slippers.  I mean, he was just sitting there on the bench, who cares??? So, now I just make Em run out to the car in her swimsuit and towel and we shower at home.  I'm sure they disapprove even more of that, but what are ya gonna do?

Caroline is IN LOVE with school.  It's not even funny.  When I go to pick her up she begs to stay.  When we get home she complains she wants to go back to school.  Tonight I said, "Tomorrow is Monday." to which she replied, "Hooray!" and then I finished, "but there's no school because it's Columbus Day" and she fell apart.  I wish I had that much enthusiasm for Mondays.  She's great because she usually gives me the play by play of what happened at school, whereas I always have to squeeze Emily for any info, which she usually doesn't offer anyway.

James is awesome.  He can count to 20.  He knows his letters and can sing the ABC's.  He loves firetrucks and bulldozers and trains.  I take him running in the morning sometimes in the jogging stroller and I usually dread construction sites, but I find myself grateful for the two gigantic construction sites we pass along the route because he is in heaven.  HE also loves taking the u-bahn (tram system).  I took him downtown the other day and he threw a huge fit when it was time to get off.  He would be happy to just ride it all day long.  And James' absolute love and delight in his life is his dad.  Holy cow, I don't remember my kids being as attached to Ben as James is.  I mean, the girls have always had love and affection for Ben, but James is borderline obsessive… like he asks for him all day long and when I say he's at work he exclaims really angrily, "Noooo!!!" and when Ben comes through that door it's a mad dash to the door and he doesn't leave Ben's side for the rest of the night.  It's super cute, but not very fun when Ben goes away for days at a time like this coming week.

I'm doing great.  Enjoying my calling as the beehive adviser.  Enjoying the fall weather… running with James, cooking for my family, reading Oliver Twist, writing PTSA newsletters,  and staying oh so busy with the day to day grind.  Really, my days are so full, it's amazing how much time it takes to be a mother of three little ones.  I enjoyed a recent trip to London/Bath England for four days with a gal from my ward to the Jane Austen fest.  I felt guilty like Beck should have been there instead of me.  It was beautiful.  Right now we don't have any trips planned, just content to be at home and enjoy what the area has to offer.  You don't have to go far to have some great experiences here.

Loved conference and am looking forward to discussing the talks.  I'm still in Alma but have the goal to finish before the year is over.  Thanks Reed!  Love you all and miss you more than you know!!!

Love,
Me

FAST SUNDAY

Don't know how Fast Sunday got away from me....I was home for most of the day (unless I was at church or doing Relief Society work), but got lost in some geneology research.  I get very little actually accomplished - the temple work is so done - but I find the actual histories and stories SOOOOO interesting...I get lost in them.  Anyway, that and my early onset Alzheimers is why I didn't post yesterday.
So, I'll just try to give you a little update of the last month.  The month of August was pretty low key.  I try to stay busy and productive, and mostly succeed in not feeling bored or lonely.  Most of you are pretty up to date on my life, so I'll try not to give too much detail or be too boring.
The month began with the departure of Phil and Kathryn and family, after a couple of wonderful weeks with them.  You were great to gather and show love and support during these busy family days!
I slipped out to a Bateman reunion that evening, on August 1.  It was nice for me...got to reconnect with some cousins that I have felt close to.  For those of you that don't know, the Batemans are the family that my grandmother (Nana) came from.  She was one of ten children in this family from West Jordan.  They have a rich heritage of hardworking, faithful people.  Theirs are some of the geneology stories that inspire me.  I hope you will check out familysearch.com from time to time and read some of their histories.  THey have left a great legacy.
That next Tuesday I began my service at the Provo Temple.  I work in the office, answering questions from patrons and helping by printing and cutting up family file names.  I am impressed by the huge efforts so many go to to make sure their family members receive temple blessings.  It's actually very good.  At a time when it seems there is much evil in the world, it gives me a sweet feeling to know there are so many REALLY GOOD PEOPLE out there.

Bonnie and Greg went on a cruise this week, and on Wednesday Greg's mom delivered little June to me to be tended til the next Monday.  We had a fun few days.  She really is an easy child, but I was surprised at what an adjustment it was for me to give her 24/7 care.  I guess I'm getting old, or spoiled, cuz I've had so much freedom.  I spent years juggling multiple children requiring lots of care, but but I guess I'm not quite as good a juggler as I used to be.  Still, we had some great bonding time...it was our Stake COnference weekend and she went with me to that with no problem.  However, as her visit was coming to an end, I was dismayed to get a phone call from Tammy in California, saying that Travis, home in Price, was very very sick.  I guess he'd had a series of episodes of very high fevers, followed by broken fevers, then a buildup to high fevers again.  I was very worried about him, especially since he was all alone.  Monday was a blur of phone calls and monitoring of Trav's state, while I tended June and arranged to get Phil, who happened to be visiting Price this day, over to Trav's house to check on him.  Sterling Potter saved us ( as he has done so many times over the years) by seeing Trav first thing MOnday morning.  He prescribed a powerful antibiotic, ran some tests, and sent him home.  But he stayed in touch with Trav, which was most comforting, knowing someone was monitoring the situation.  After Phil payed Trav a visit, He indicated that he didn't think Travis should stay alone this night.  Another round of things to consider.  Reed was willing to go down, tho it would not be super easy for him, but I somehow felt that it should be me.  So, after picking up Bonnie and Greg from the airport, and reuniting them with sweet June, I headed down to Price Monday night.  I found Trav doing better, but still anxious about the possible return of the dreaded fever.  Hence, I was glad to be there, just for backup in case.  I straightened the house a bit, put clean sheets on his bed, and finally fell into the top bunk in Matthews room.  Funny.  Trav slept decently that night, for the first time in several nights, and the fever did not return.  I tried to leave him comfortable, convinced that the worst was over, and headed back to Orem about 11:00, rushing to get back for my temple shift.  Trav continued to slowly improve, tho Sterling warned him he would "feel like he got run over by a truck" for the next week or so.  Trav's plan to join his family in California had to be adjusted....left at the crack of dawn Friday morning instead of the Tuesday before.  But as sick as he was, it was pretty remarkable that he got out of here at all.  He salvaged  a couple of days with his family in California before they had to return to Utah
On AUgust 13, Becky and Debra and I went up to a wedding shower for the girl who is marrying Spencer Pond.  It was held in Todd's back yard.  It was a nice night among the Blackburns, still dear to us all.
On this Saturday night, the 15th, my cousin Diane and I accepted an invitation to a gathering of singles like ourselves at a friend's house.  She is very active and very comfortable in the singles scene (I have worked with here in the temple), and after several invitations to miscellaneous events, we decided to sample this one.  I'm just here to say the scene is not comfortable for me!  Still, as social as I am, I do like friends and enjoy meeting people, so I tried to think of it as just for that purpose, and it wasn't too bad.
That Sunday we gathered for dinner, and were happy to have Conor Blackburn and family join us.  THey are such pleasant, kind people, we loved having them and their two children join us.  The only thing that made me mad was that this should have been the day we celebrated Ashley's birthday, which would have been later in the month.  Can I just plead Alzheimers?  I kicked myself when I remembered....Never fear, Ashley, we WILL remember you for your birthday!  We love you and want to recognize you.  Now, as I write this, I am aware that I missed another opportunity as we celebrated Labor Day,  We should have had a BIRTHDAY PARTY!  But please do not fear, Ashley, your day WILL COME, and we WILL CELEBRATE YOU...
The next  weekend was the Blackburn reunion in Loa.  It was super nice.  Five of my eight kids got there.  THe others were excused...Mindy, well, her excuse is pretty obvious.  Travis was barely home from California and still exhausted from that effort, and Phil was at the end of a very long road to Denver.  Still, I thought we did splendid getting ourselves there.  I am actually impressed at how attached I feel to these people, who are my husband's family.  Families can be knit together in love...I hope my daughters and sons in laws can feel that same closeness as our years together pass.
We arrived Friday night, and got to stay in a real cowboy hotel, The Broken Spur Inn, run by some Blackburn cousins, and managed a couple of hikes on Saturday morning before the reunion began Saturday afternoon.  It was lots of hugging and laughing and eating the most wonderful potluck food ever.  We came home Saturday night tired, but rewarded for our efforts.
A quiet Sunday, in which I got a new Bishop.  I fear it will not be the same without my old Bishop, whom I loved dearly.  I wonder at how much time I will still serve as RS President....it has been 3 1/2
 years.
The next week involved a trip to Price to protest the raising of my taxes on the two offices I own there.  Had to sit across from four men and plead my case.  Held my ground, and got substantial concessions, which was only fair.
That Friday night (the 28th) we went to Hyrum's birthday party, which was well chronicled in Reed's post  So fun to see his sweet  little personality develop...such a good boy!
On Saturday afternoon of this week ( the 29th), Travis and Tammy brought their children up and left them with me for a little while as they tried to get a little break by going to dinner and a movie for their anniversary celebration.  Hard to eek out even a few hours... Emery came a little later, and would stay with me til Sunday, as I would tend her while her parents were trying to celebrate Ashley's birthday in Park City.  So we invited the Griffins over and had a party.  The kids seem to enjoy each other and get along so well...with the possible exception of Katelin, who, still, is getting better!
Sunday took Emery and I to church, soon after which Dennis came by and picked up Emery. I had two ecclesiastical interviews, with the Bishop and Stake President today.  Have registered for a class at BYU....an Art History class.  Have to have an ecclesiastical endorsement to attend!  Are you serious?  Felt really stupid answering questions about obeying the dress code, staying morally clean, etc.  Passed.  Whew!
So last week brought a slight cooling and a hint that fall might be around the corner.  But then that is September, so I will save that for next month.  Everyone seems to be coping with life in our family.  We are waiting anxiously for the arrival of Ashley's baby  We are excited to have another sweet infant in our family.
I might also mention that as this month passed, I read the Book of Mormon along with other family members.  Loved this experience!  Somehow it felt like reading that together put us on the same road, the same path, as we are working at returning to our Father in Heaven.  Made me feel good.
Love to you all....hope your days and weeks and months are passing in happiness and goodness.
